Description
For the Ser IIA & III we can offer a high ratio transfer case gear set. This gear set was developed as a stronger alternative to the Series “overdrive.” By using the High Ratio conversion the High range is raised by 31.8% (overdrive is 27.5%) whilst leaving Low range unchanged. This suits most users who like a higher gear for on road economy, retaining the stock low range for off road use. Other advantages of this conversion, compared with fitting 3.54 diffs, are:- the speedo. drive will not need re-calibrating, there is no loss of handbrake efficiency and most importantly there is no loss of strength. . Please note this kit cannot be used as well as an Overdrive but you can still use the rear PTO.
In order to fit this kit you will need to modify your existing transfer box casing in order to accept these gears. Full instructions on how to make this modification are available in the technical section.
Please note when fitting the intermediate pin the 2 bushes are not exactly in line, we have to do this to get the correct gear backlash, this does not cause any issues but its common for the intermediate pin to be tight when fitting, you will need to hold it to the side and and knock in with a soft mallet.
Please note that we cannot be responsible for any noise issues that may arise caused by the incorrect machining of your casing.
Sorry but we are not able to offer a fitting service on this kit,

Excellent product!
Bought the gear kit as the full kit was sold out. Ashcrofts kindly drilled my own transfer case (at cost). The modified case was excellent and the gear kit easy to assemble. A huge improvement on the Fairey overdrive, my Series 3 feels like it’s been given a new lease of life, but above all the gearboxes are now so quiet as to barely be heard! Highly recommend – a modern, cost effective, high quality and robust upgrade to any Series. Makes the vehicle cope much easier with modern traffic.

Motorway speed
Having a need to rebuild my gearbox and transfer box after abfailure, purchased the high ratio gear set and modified the transfer casing to fit it.
The higher gear ratios have transformed the driving experience, now able to hold 60mph and rise to 70mph on the flat means my series vehicle can operate at Motorway speeds.
Town driving is easier too, with first high in a sensible place for pulling away and much lower revs around town.
Off road, low range is entirely unaffected and is as awesome as it always was.
Expensive if you have to pay a mechanic to fit, but well worth the price/effort.

Now I got a New series 1!
Was told my ’55 won’t have enough power to make use of the high ratio box. Not True. I love it ! It transformed my S1 into a much more practical old vehicle to use on the road now. Much quieter, like I can have a conversation at 60 miles an hour – Unheard of ?!! I could never hear the wind noise around the square cab at 55 m/h, on top of the screaming engine and vibrating gear levers and what not? Now wind noise is mostly what I hear at that speed and above. I clocked 72 mph on a long level stretch on the highway !! In a series 1 !! I have only ever reached a very unhappy 60ish before !!
The engine now uses its better torque revs for cruising, rather than it’s low power(high consumption) top revs range. First gear is much more usable in town as I can actually gain some speed in it after pulling away into traffic, before changing into 2nd. All the gears feel nicely long now. Reverse is pretty fast though; I select low range many times for maneuvering in reverse(having freewheeling hubs).
Landy still does not like uphill, but changing down is a normal occurrence anyways … always has been LOL.
Using the new speed gain, I found consumption about the same, but cruising around more relaxed it gained about 1 mile/liter of fuel, a big increase I thought ?
Modifying the box and putting it back in is a lot of work, but well worth it at the end I think? And still at least half cheaper than a new Roamerdrive (which is now the talk of the town, isn’t it?) If doing it yourself that is.
For bigger engine conversions, this box is a must ! Can’t believe it’s not more popular ?
Well done and thank you the Ashcrofts , I am a fan !
If you are in NZ, I’m happy to help with your Ashcroft !
